Is "Home Organization" At The Top of Your To-Do List?

Author: Elyse Coleman

Home organization is right up there at the top of many To-Do lists, along with losing weight and paying off credit cards--and making that list is as far as many of us get. Closet organization, garage organization and home office organization is where most focus their attention. We make ‘resolutions\' to do better and then those unkept promises sit like little gremlins on our shoulder, taunting us. Our intentions are good but getting started can be hard. So how Do you get started?

What does getting organized really mean?

First of all, what does getting or being organized really mean? When it comes to the home office & desk organization, you may think that the starting point for getting organized is buying folders; marking them with nice colorful labels and then putting all those papers you have lying around into those beautiful folders. Or maybe you come home with bins, boxes and trays galore, believing your new purchases are just the ticket to conquer that clutter that is driving you to distraction. After all, isn\'t what you see happening on those home organization TV shows? At the end of the show there is always a shot of three lovely boxes sitting on a shelf or some other equally beautiful ‘solution\' that started out as a haphazard, jumbled pile of papers.

Actually, neither of these is a starting point. A common mistake is to confuse being organized and being neat. Both processes described above can neaten up your desk or office but neatness does not guarantee an organized home or office. Ending up with results that really make a difference requires a detailed vision of the end result you\'re seeking. And that takes time and effort BEFORE you go shopping for the cleaning supplies and engaging the clutter control team in your family.

Knowing what you want

Until you determined what 'home organizing' means for YOU it is very difficult to put in place products, systems and procedures that will really meet your needs. Here is your assignment. Sit down with a cup of coffee or tea, get relaxed and then vividly imagine how getting organized will make your life different. Be as specific and detailed as possible. You have to know where you are going, so to speak, before you can create the roadmap to get there. Knowing what an organized home looks like in your mind\'s eye will help point you to both what products to use and what system to implement.

Ask yourself:

How will my life be different with improved closet organization? What will I be able to do, or find, or file with improved desk organization? Here are just two of examples of good, specific answers.

'I will be able to pay all my bills and file all the related paperwork in just two 45-minute sessions each month.'

'When I need to retrieve a previously filed item I will be able to go directly to it.'

'What do I do easily or well and what do I find difficult?'

Once you have completed this assignment, then you are ready to start choosing and implementing products and systems and gaining more family time.

Whether you plan to do all the organizing by yourself or get a professional organizer in Bucks County, the answers to these questions are crucial to your success. Additional information on filing systems is available in the article Keep It Simple.
